Changing your career can be tough, but also refreshing. A new change of pace is needed from time to time, and it’s not healthy to stick to the same old routine on a daily basis for years on end. A change in career doesn’t have to mean turning your life around, but it’s important that you spend some time finding something that’s right for you, rather than a new career with the same feeling.

You should know it’s normal to feel nervous about a career switch. Giving up something you already know for something new and different is risky, but it’s worth it if your current career isn’t bringing you any joy.

Have a backup plan

Know that it’s not always easy to find an opening in a new career, and no matter how desperate you are to get out of your current job – you might not find something any time soon. So even if you do happen to just up and quit, you want to make sure you have enough money to keep the lights on while you begin your search.

It’s generally never a good idea to put all of your eggs in one basket when you cannot guarantee that it’s going to work out. The more you have to rely on, the better things will work out for you. You wouldn’t want to have to rush your decision based on limited resources.

Opening a franchise

It’s not always the career that’s the problem, but the position you’re stuck in can start to bring you down. Instead, you could look to opening a franchise in your current field that gives you the room to expand on what you can already do. For example, working in healthcare can be a struggle if you’re dealing with poor management – but opening a home healthcare franchise can really turn things around for you.

Take a break first

It might not be a complete change in career that you need, but rather just a break from what you’re used to doing. If you’re spending every day doing the same thing and constantly being under pressure, it can wear you down. Burnout is more common than you might think, and it can affect anyone at any time – so it’s worth considering that what you need is just a temporary change in surroundings. Give yourself time to refresh your feelings, and you might be more open about getting back to your usual career.

Try it before committing

If you have a specific career in mind before you start making plans, it might be a good idea to try it out for yourself before you fully commit to it. Learn more about the career and try picking up a hobby that you can dedicate to it in your free time. Interested in pursuing a design career? Try taking a course! It’s important to know what you’re getting yourself into before you uproot what you’ve already got going on.
