If you’re a nature lover and you want to pass that love down to your kids, the best way to do it is to go on a family camping trip. It could provide you with the opportunity to bond as a family over something you feel strongly about. However, if you’re taking your kids’ camping, there are careful preparations to be made.
Here is how to plan and execute a fun and relaxing camping trip your kids will enjoy.
Pack smartly
The way you organize things when packing can make your camping experience pleasant and easy. If you know where all your supplies are and if everything you need is easily reachable, you will have much less to worry about. A good idea would be to get plastic storage boxes with covers so that you can divide your supplies into categories, pack them and then clearly label the boxes. This way you won’t have to rummage through your things whenever you’re looking for something. You can separate your kitchen supplies from your food, bathroom items, clothes or toys, which not only makes things simple when camping, but also when you return home and have to wash things and put them away, or simply keep them in the boxes for next year.
Get the right camping equipment
If this is your first camping trip, you may want to rent some of the equipment, instead of buying everything. That way you can try out different types of gear so that you know what to invest in once you decide to buy your own. However, if you’re a regular camper, you should invest in some basic outdoor camping gear, like a quality tent, a warm sleeping bag, and a mosquito net. Other essential things you will need are sleeping pads, a camping stove, various camping tools, a first-aid kit, but also some camping chairs and a table, which is a smart investment since you can use them for other activities when you get back home as well. Before the trip, practice setting up your tent and check if your stove or any gadgets work so that there aren’t any unpleasant surprises once you arrive at your destination.
Bring the appropriate food
Before you begin your trip, you might want to plan your meals, so that you know exactly what to bring and how to store it. You will need a good cooler but bear in mind that you might not fit everything you want inside it, which is why it’s important to prepare a meal list in advance. Buy food that your children like and get enough of it to last you your whole trip. Also, bring enough snacks, like granola bars, crackers, and vegetable sticks, so that your children don’t get too hungry between meals. Preparing tasty food outdoors can add a lot to your camping experience, especially if you can involve your children in the cooking process. They will love being helpful and the whole family can have fun.
Plan your activities
If you want to avoid the stress of nervous and bored children, basic outdoor camping gear for every day you spend camping. The activities can range from roasting marshmallows on a campfire and playing Uno cards to hiking and exploring the area around the camp. Bring your bikes if you enjoy cycling as a family, and if there’s a lake or river nearby, maybe you can go swimming or fishing. Bring a lot of games your children, such as card-matching memory games, and things like a Frisbee and a ball, so that your children always have something to do.
Do your research
Before you go on your camping trip, make sure you have all the necessary information. For example, learn everything about the campsite and its location, if they offer any activities for children or the whole family, and if they allow pets. Book your campsite spot in advance and check what the weather forecast for that period is so that you don’t have to spend most of your time inside your tent, hiding from the rain. Also, ask if the campsite offers water and electricity for the campers, as well as if they have a camping store.
You can have a great time camping with your family, as long as you make good plans and get prepared. However, don’t overdo it. Leave some room for the unexpected and you might just turn your camping trip into a little adventure.

We only went camping once growing up, but it was fun!
Rebecca,
Thank you for your comment, when I was a kid, my parents rarely took me and my brother for camping, but I decided to bring new habits to my family life now when I have a parent role. And we enjoy it!
Great tips!
Thank you Barb!
I’ve gone camping in a fifth wheel since I was 2 years old, but in my marriage, we go tent camping multiple times a year! I stand by all these points, as they are tried and true!! My favorite camping trip was last year…we decided one Saturday morning to see if any state parks had openings. One did. I packed everything in 2 hours and we left. Two dogs and a baby! This year, we will have a toddler and a baby! Fun stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Monica,
Fantastic, I am glad to hear that you enjoy family camping too <3
I’ve never been camping!!! I think I’d still be scared to bring a kid tho…I’m scared myself! Ha!
Hi Erica, don’t force yourself if you are scared.
But if you are curious to try, maybe you can choose some less wild spot, that is easy to access and close to some vivid rural area where you could have anything you need in case that you give up 🙂
I didn’t go camping a lot with my parents when I was a kid, but I can’t wait to take my own family. Great tips and thanks for sharing!
Nice article for camping.
Mee too Valerie, same thing. Thank you for your comment!
Renting is a GREAT idea, especially because kids grow so quickly and can easily grow out of gear! Most major cities have a rental option, like Last Minute Gear (Www.lastmingear.com) in the San Francisco Bay Area!
