How to Clean Using Only What's in Your Kitchen Cupboards

A lot of cleaning products aren’t very environmentally friendly, and more and more people are being to worry about the chemicals involved in a good spring clean. If you’re one of these people, don’t worry. There are lots of cleaning tasks that can be done very effectively using only what’s in your kitchen cupboards.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is naturally antibacterial, smells fresh, and the citric acid can be used to clean lots of things around the house. Start with your kitchen garbage disposal unit. Put in some lemon slices and ice cubes, run the disposal, and it will smell better instantly.

You can use lemon juice to freshen up bins too. Wipe the bin with a cloth soaked in lemon juice. You can also lemon juice to polish brass and copper. It won’t damage the finish, but a quick wipe can return the shine.

White Vinegar

White vinegar is almost as useful around the house as lemon juice. Ovens do very well with a soak in white vinegar. Squirt some white vinegar inside the oven, let it sit for a few minutes, and then wipe it off. For tough dirt, make a paste with vinegar and baking soda.

For tiled floors, add some white vinegar into the mop bucket. Disguise the strong vinegar smell with a few drops of peppermint oil.

White vinegar is perfect for shifting hard water stains. Soak tissue paper in vinegar and wrap it around your taps, or tie a bag of vinegar around your showerhead, and let it soak overnight. Fill a squirty bottle with vinegar and use it to clean your shower screen.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is very cheap and is very effective for cleaning. Mix it with white vinegar to make a stain-removing paste.

On its own, it can be sprinkled onto a musty mattress, with your favorite essential oil. Leave for an hour, and then hoover it away to get rid of lingering smells. Use the same technique on old rugs and carpets too. Even pet beds can be freshened up in this way too.

Coco-Cola

It might seem odd, but coca-cola can be very effective for cleaning limescale out of your toilet. If you have some coca-cola sitting around that has gone flat, pour it into the toilet, and leave it overnight. In the morning, flush, and you’ll have a sparkling clean toilet bowl.

Dryer Sheets

Screens, such as your computer monitor or TV screen, attract a lot of dust, thanks to the static that they create. An easy to get rid of this dust, as well as any fingerprints or smudges, is to use dryer sheets to dust the screens. The dust is attracted to the sheet, and they can help to stop more dust from building up. You can use them on your skirting boards too.
