One of the most frustrating things about being an adult who works and pays bills is employers who pay “industry rates’ – and these rates don’t cover everything! When you’re experienced, educated and you are working for someone, you hope to earn enough money to pay your bills and be able to have some savings and money for fun. Living paycheck to paycheck can be the most stressful thing in life because you are never quite there with having enough to be secure.

The key is to get a higher salary sorted out and that means learning what you can do to change your status quo. Some people choose to sidestep their current industry and get a new degree where others decide to ask their management team for training opportunities. No matter what you do, you should ensure that you are doing what you want to get that higher salary – don’t put yourself in a position earning more money will be a bad thing! So, what could you do to gain a higher salary?

1. Get Promoted

One of the best ways to earn more money is to get promoted. You need to stand out in your business and make yourself seen by your employer. If your employer can see you, you’re going to need to be able to show off how amazing you actually are. Hit your KPIs, be on time and leave when your work is done and really show off your time management skills. All of this can help you to get promoted in your job. Talk to your boss about promotion and find out the goalposts so that you know how to hit them!

2. Move

The easiest way to get promoted if your current management team is unwilling to do it? Jump ship and head to a business that sees your worth! You don’t deserve to ever feel less than you are as an employee, so you should think about moving to a company that will pay your worth. You know your worth better than anyone and quitting a job is a good thing if it will bring you a positive outcome. Find a company willing to pay you the salary you deserve and don’t be afraid to pitch yourself at the higher salary your current boss refused you on!

3. Sidestep into a new industry

There is only so much you can learn in some industries, which means that there are ceilings on your salary. You need a role that will challenge you and give you the right opportunities to learn, and it’s these roles that will often happily pay you more money! You should consider that you can sidestep into these new industries and finally feel happier in your career choices. You will also then naturally have a new ladder to climb and a new way to progress. When you do this, you will have a higher salary and opportunities for an even higher one than that in the end!

Working should give you a purpose – make it happen with a comfortable salary first.
