To really rip the benefits of a garden, one must realize that each one of us is a part of nature and that every time we spend time in our gardens, we reconnect to it again. Gardening is a form of therapy, an effective way to relieve stress and to achieve the balance we have lost. In order for our body and spirit to enjoy the garden completely, here’s how you can adapt the garden design to your needs.
1. Enjoy the view
If your home has a beautiful view, don’t block it with furniture or trees but make connect it to your garden. The scenery beyond the garden can become a part of the garden if you use the landscape to frame it. You can use climbers at each side of the view to make it more eye-appealing. Even large, public gardens use the surrounding landscape to create a stunning atmosphere – just check out some of the garden design for ideas.
2. Relax with heavenly fragrances
There are many fragrant flowers and herbs you could grow in the garden. Essential oils are effective at stress-relieving due to their specific scents, so why not use the same approach in the garden? Have a private aromatherapy every time you step into your garden. Roses and jasmine, as well as thymes and lavender, will calm your senses, ease a headache and clear your mind. You can also add plants with a strong but pleasant smell, like evening primrose or honeysuckle.
Even if you have a tiny garden and you live in an apartment, you still can have your garden design, and beautiful flowers all around you.
3. A different type of pet
We all know that stroking our pets is incredibly relaxing, reducing our blood pressure and anxiety levels. It may surprise you but there are some tactile plants perfect for stroking, which can be equally effective as stroking a pet. Different types of grass, starting from the gentlest ones (Stipa tenuissima) and silky ones (Miscanthus sinesis) to the ones with furry leaves (Stachys byzantina).
4. Create a dining area
This doesn’t have to be anything fancy – just a long bench with a couple of chairs with sitting cushions. Most of us eat food fast, not giving ourselves a chance to enjoy, so you should make it a full experience of eating among your beautiful leafy friends. On the other hand, you can go with the American style and install a fireplace and a barbecue to really take the dining experience to another level.
5. Remove the clutter
It’s very important to let your garden “breathe”. It’s a place made up of natural elements, so the first thing is to remove all the necessary items from it. Leave only the items that serve the same purpose as the garden – relaxation and enjoyment. Gardening affects your psychical health in a good way, so all you need is a good plan. Of course, include the necessary gardening equipment like hoses for watering the plants and gardening tools. They a part of the same universe. Anything else is just clutter, cluttering your garden and your mind. You don’t need too many reminders of the outside world, you see.
6. Calming sounds
When it’s not completely quiet, a garden should soothe you with pleasant sounds. Murmuring water from a small fountain can do wonders for a cluttered mind. Wind chimes hung in the trees will take you far away from the traffic noise. The rustle of bamboo will fill your soul with positive feelings, helping you let go of all the problems. If you have a bird table, put a couple of tiny bits of apple on it – it will attract birds that may easily thank you with lovely chirping.
7. Be a child again and get a swing or a hammock
In case you have two sturdy trees close to each other in the garden, then remind yourself of simpler times by hanging a hammock between them. One stronger tree is all you need to install a swing and enjoy those precious moments of floating through the air like when you were little.
8. Hide from the privy eyes
A perfect garden is the one that gives us privacy so that we can be completely on our own, hidden from the outside world and free. Americans are known for valuing their privacy, so you can get many creative ideas from them when it comes to gardening equipment like hoses. For example, you can go for screens at the right places or simply put up a wall or install a fence at an appropriate height. Overhead roofs are alternatives to providing more privacy if you want to really feel you are safely tucked in your personal paradise.
Final thoughts
A garden is a small eco-community of so many different plants. You can create a deeply personal space inside your yard through so many magnificent flowers, trees, and bushes. The point of a garden is to help you reconnect with the inner part of yourself, which are and will always be a part of nature, too. That’s why you should carefully plan every step of the garden design – in a way, you are creating a safe space for your soul and your mind.
