When you go away on vacation with your family, you’ll want everyone to have a good chance to relax – after all, that’s what a vacation is really all about. However, after a few days of relaxation, it’s important to ensure that your kids are being active enough. Some days doing not a lot is not a problem – it should even be encouraged if they do need some time to themselves. However, this can’t happen every day, or by the time they head back to school in September, they will be unhealthier and less inclined to exercise, and that can be a hard habit to get out of. Read on to find out how to have a healthy vacation and keep your kids active for them and for you.

When you get to wherever it is you’re going, it’s important to get out and find things to do. Start by researching the area, and you’ll likely find there are plenty of activities being organized for school children to enjoy, many of which will be active ones.

It’s a good idea to let your child explore as many different activities and ideas as they want to, budget and time allowing, of course. Not only will they be staying active by doing all these things, but they won’t be bored either.

Don’t make them do anything they really don’t like or don’t want to do, however. They won’t get anything out of an activity they dislike, and they won’t try their hardest during their time, so it’s just not worth it.

Be Active Together

As well as signing your kids up for special activity days and for other scheduled activities, it’s essential that you spend some time together. The summer vacation is a great time to bond, especially if you have all been busy over the last few months. So why not be active as a family? You can go on a fun bike ride or visit a waterpark, and for the most part, the kids will simply have a fun day and not realize they are exercising at all.

Afterward, when you have had all the fun you need, and you are tired out after the activities you have done, you’ll also have some wonderful memories to enjoy for many years to come. Once the kids start school, you don’t have that much time with them – they spend most of it with other people. So taking a day here and there to have fun, bond, and be active is crucial for the health of your relationship and your overall wellbeing and happiness.

Give Them Healthy Snack Options

One of the big issues when it comes to your vacation and your kids’ health (and your own, come to that) is the food. Even if you are all being highly active, perhaps more so than usual, you’ll often find that the rich food and the amount of choice you have means you’re eating more than usual too.

Although it’s good to enjoy some new cuisine and to have a great vacation, it’s also a good idea to offer as many healthy snack options as possible. That way, even if the evening meal or breakfast isn’t as healthy as you might like, you can at least still ensure your kids are eating fruit and healthier meals at some points during the day.
