Choosing to move to any new city can be a major decision, but it’s especially true when considering relocating to Palo Alto. This isn’t just any other American city; depending on who you ask, it could be the American city. Some of the world’s biggest and most innovative brands are headquartered in Palo Alto, and that gives the city a dynamic, ever-evolving feel. It’s not a city for the faint of heart, but if you love being in the middle of the action, then there’s arguably nowhere on the planet that you’d rather be.

Given its intensity and stature, moving to Palo Alto requires a bit more forethought and planning than your average move. With that in mind, we thought it’d be a good idea to put together some handy tips that should ensure your move to the city gets off to the best possible start.

Invest in a Bike

You might think that buying a bike is an unusual way to open up a list of tips for moving to Palo Alto, but you’ll understand us once you arrive. For all its good qualities — and there are a lot — Palo Alto also suffers from a flaw that impacts many other Californian cities: traffic. If you value your free time and sanity, then investing in a bicycle (and learning how to be a confident cyclist if required) can be a game-changer. Palo Alto is one of the most cycle-friendly cities in the country, making it easy to get around on two wheels. Plus, cycling is wonderful for both your physical and mental health.

Take Your Time Choosing a Neighborhood

Palo Alto may be a small city, but it’s also home to several distinct neighborhoods. Deciding which part of the city to live in will have a big impact on your overall experience, so it’s important to take your time before choosing. There’s plenty of Palo Alto short term housing available, so we’d recommend booking yourself into temporary accommodation when you first arrive and then use the first few months to scout out which neighborhood you’d like to call home on a long term basis. There’ll be a risk of ending up in an area that doesn’t quite work for you if you jump into a long-term place before getting the lay of the land.

Get Ready for Increased Costs

Even people who come from other expensive cities like New York can be surprised at Palo Alto’s high cost of living. Everything from groceries to public transport is not only above the national average, but significantly above. With that said, jobs in this area pay more highly, so if you’re moving for work, then you’ll be unlikely to feel the burn too much.

Throw Yourself Into All the Fun

Finally, remember that there’s no better way to embrace your new life in Palo Alto than by throwing yourself into all the fun that the city provides. From outdoor hikes to art galleries and boutique stores, it’s a city that is almost as focused on good times as it is on work.
