**I participated in the Joy Williams – Venus album review program as a member of One2One Network. I was provided an album to review but all opinions are my own.
You know her from the four-time Grammy winning folk-rock duo The Civil Wars. After their hiatus in 2012 and the duo breaking up in August 2014, the singer-songstress has rarely exposed herself, except through the duo’s music. I am here to tell you about Joy Williams’ new solo album Venus (on shelves June 29th).
While working on my blog, I listened to the Venus. It is nice smoothing music to have on while working. Venus has been a in the works since June 24, 2013, when Joy Williams wrote her first song in Nashville. It was a few days before her son’s 1st birthday. Over the following year, she wrote 75+ songs for this record.
I have always been a music lover. Once upon a top I wanted to own a start a record label. That’s how much I loved music. I am glad that I have been able to review some amazing music through my blog. This album, well, it is amazing. The album has 11 songs on it. Joy Williams did not hold back, her feelings, her thoughts are all in this album. This album is like a break up and moving on album. But this album is not about The Civil Wars ending. It’s about Joy Williams’ growth. You can see her growing a little in each song. Starting with the first song, Before I Sleep, she sings about miles and miles before she sleeps. The last song Welcome Home, well the title speaks for itself. Welcome Home and this was the perfect song to end this album.
How does Joy Williams’ feel about her new album coming out? She said, “It feels like I’m reclaiming myself. I identified so much with The Civil Wars that when it went away I had to process the myth that I’d been a part of creating, free myself of that, and rediscover my own voice. Working through that really opened me up. In finding my voice I found myself again.” For Joy Williams, making this album was a way to move forward. To heal. She was able to find her own voice again and stand on her own. She wanted this album to be something that people could find their own story in. And then move beyond it.
This album does have a theme that ties it all together. It is acceptance, transcendence, trans-formation, and letting go of things that don’t serve you. This is a great album to relax with a glass of wine or to add to your playlist for a summer road trip. You can purchase the Venus album on iTunes and Amazon.

This lady has a nice voice. Her songs are pretty to listen to also.
Never heard this before – great song! I saw Venus and Williams and thought it was about tennis! 🙂
I LOVE folk rock. People give me weird looks when I say that, but it is the most entertaining music to listen to 🙂 I’m definitely checking out her new album!
Great review! This sounds like an album I would listen to on a road trip during the summer and I’m always up for a glass of wine with good music. Thanks for sharing this!
I think she picked the wrong album title. At first I thought this was about the tennis player
You are the second person to say that about the title, thinking it is about the tennis player. I am sure there are a ton more people who may be thinking the exact thing.
