When people think about Australia, in most cases they picture Sydney Opera House, koalas, and wonderful surfing waves. However, this continent is also the home of one of the most beautiful islands in the world – Tasmania. This island has a modest population of half a million people which makes it a perfect remote travel destination to visit especially with a family.
If you have trouble to make up your mind, here are 9 reasons why Tasmania is one of the top travel destinations of 2019 you should definitely put on a list.
1. Freycinet National Park
Freycinet National Park on the east coast of Tasmania is perfect for hiking, swimming, and camping with its numerous lookouts and beaches like Cape Tourville lighthouse. Sleepy Bay has various reddish rock formations which are an ideal spot for a picnic and it will take you only 10 minutes to get to the beach. Freycinet is covered in greenery and crystal clear waters you can all see if you climb on top of the Mount Amos or Wineglass Bay Lookout.
2. Lavender Fields
Bridestowe Lavender Estate is one of the most memorable places to visit in Tasmania with purple and green colors dominating the area. If you travel to Australia between December and February, make sure to come to see lavender fields when flowers are in full bloom. Purple ice cream and Bobbie the lavender bear are special attractions for the kids, while the mountainous landscapes nearby are a perfect background for family photos.
3. Cradle Mountain
Cradle Mountain is part of the Cradle Mt – Lake St Clair National Park and is full of alpine heathlands and wild landscapes. Besides being made from remarkably beautiful scenery this is also a popular skiing destination in Australia. The area stays under snow until late in the year and you can stay at one of the many accommodations in the area and enjoy the winter bliss with your family.
4. Bay of Fires
The orange granite boulders and blue ocean of Bay of Fires make this area a perfect spot to relax and have some quality family time. There is a good chance you will see a Tasmanian devil, wombats, and kangaroos here being that the bay is partially a part of the Mount William National Park. You can all go on a bird watching tour as a family since the area is famous for the rich variety of birds that live here.
5. Waterfalls at Mount Field
Horseshoe Falls is a breathtaking water feature in the Mt. Field National Park not so far from another beautiful landmark Russell Falls. The third waterfall in this area is Lady Barron Falls and a Tall Trees walk leads therefrom Horseshoe Falls. All three waterfalls are located among gorgeous rainforest and the visitors are welcomed with a fairytale-like environment.
6. Tasman National Park
Among the dolerite sea cliffs and rock formations of Tasman Peninsula, you will find Tasman National Park an area full of life and dramatic landscapes. Guided Three Capes Walk is an ideal way to go on a family hike through eucalyptus forest and visit Waterfall Bay’s 200-meter waterfall. This is the destination for amazing coastal walks that kids will love thanks to unique scenery, animals and plant life on the way.
7. Bruny Island
Bruny Island Neck is a piece of land full of native wildlife and you will easily spot famous fairy penguins from the viewing platforms at the Neck Game Reserve. Timber stairs offer a dramatic path to the lookout where you will have a 360-degree view over the area. You can visit the memorial site for Nuenonne indigenous people who lived here before European settlers came to Bruny Island.
8. Hobart
As the capital of Tasmania, Hobart attracts a lot of tourists over the year who want to experience both urban and rural parts of this island at the same time. Richmond Maze is only half an hour drive from Hobart and besides the maze, your kids can visit a lolly shop and see the oldest bridge in Australia. Feeding the fish at Salmon Ponds in Derwent Valley is basically a tradition and kids love to visit nearby Museum of Trout Fishing.
9. Port Arthur
If you want to learn more about Australian history, then Port Arthur is an ideal destination to visit especially if you are traveling with children. This area may be a testimony to the dark past, but it offers an opportunity to travel back through time and find out more about convict Australia. There are many buildings to explore here like churches, asylum, and the hospital and you can easily find a tour that will best suit your interest.
All in all
These are some of the reasons that show Tasmania is one of the top destinations this year with its magnificent nature, rich history and unique offer of activities. Everyone can find something fun and exciting in Tasmania no matter their age. This is why this is a perfect travel destination for families since it has so many interesting activities for kids that even adults can’t resist.
