Christmas in New York is magical. When you want to get into the festive spirit, there’s nowhere better on earth than the city that never sleeps. However, New York can be extremely busy at this time of year so it’s essential to plan your trip in advance.

The last thing you want to be doing is wandering around wondering where to go next in heavy crowds. If you’re planning a trip to New York this Christmas season, you’ve come to the right place. Take a look at this quick guide on what not to miss.

Macy’s on Herald Square

If you’re a fan of Miracle on 34th Street, your first stop should be Macy’s. Not only will you be greeted by exquisite Christmas windows but you’ll feel the Christmas atmosphere almost tangible in the air. If you have children with you, make a stop at Santaland as you look around.

You may find that there are queues when you get there but the wait is well worth it. You’re also in the perfect place to do some Christmas shopping and tick some of those gifts you need off your list.

Rockefeller Center

This is another landmark you’ve probably seen in many movies including Home Alone 2: Lost In New York. It’s such a popular attraction at Christmas that it’s considered Christmas central during the holiday season. One of its main attractions is the gigantic Christmas tree all lit up with a crystal star on the top.

Discover Rockefeller Center in all its glory by visiting early in the day to try and avoid the largest crowds. You’ll find Rockefeller on 5th Avenue between 49th and 50th Street.

Saks Fifth Avenue

Since you’re on Fifth Avenue already, you won’t want to miss your chance to visit Saks. You’ll find a light show that happens every ten minutes between 5 pm and 11 pm. The shows start from mid-November and last until early January.

There’s often something different to see here that is set apart from the rest of the city. Although the displays and lights can still make you feel Christmassy, the themes aren’t about Christmas most of the time. They’re most often based on a Broadway show or story.

Holiday Markets

If shopping in big chain stores isn’t your thing, you’ll find plenty of Christmas markets scattered around New York. Make your way to Union Square and you’ll find over one hundred stalls full of all the gifts you could ever want. You may need to buy an extra suitcase to get everything home.

These markets are usually very busy from November onwards so be prepared to face the crowds. It’s also important to be mindful of thieves while you’re browsing. Keep your belongings close to your body at all times.

New York at Christmas time should be on everyone’s bucket list. There’s not just plenty to see but the atmosphere will leave you with a feeling that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
