There are many effective measures you can take to ward off wrinkles. But what happens when wrinkles have already formed? Can you reverse the wrinkling process? This post takes a look at some of the different anti-wrinkle treatments and their effectiveness.
Why do wrinkles form?
Wrinkles form on our skin as we get older as a result of a loss of collagen. This causes the skin to become less elastic, leading to wrinkling and sagging.
Our skin naturally produces less collagen as we get older, however, certain bad habits can reduce the production of collagen further. This includes smoking, maintaining a poor diet, and not wearing suncream. Stress and lack of sleep can also increase the development of wrinkles – particularly forehead wrinkles and tear troughs.
Can you reverse wrinkles?
The most effective way to reverse wrinkles is to undergo cosmetic surgery. Operations like facelifts can permanently remove wrinkles like crow’s feet, while brow lifts can get rid of forehead lines. Procedures even exist to help remove deep wrinkles.
What about without cosmetic surgery?
Not everyone is prepared to go under the knife to reduce wrinkles. Moreover, not everyone can afford to get cosmetic surgery. Fortunately, there are other options. Although not quite as efficient at getting rid of wrinkles, they could be worth trying.
Skin products
A lot of skin products claim to reduce wrinkles, however, there are only a few that actually work. Retinol creams are your best option as they can help to restore collagen. These will only reverse very fine wrinkles and are unlikely to have much impact against deep wrinkles, which is something to bear in mind.
Injectables
Injectables like Botox and dermal fillers can help eliminate wrinkles. Botox is best suited for dynamic wrinkles like crow’s feet and forehead lines, while dermal fillers are better for static wrinkles like marionette lines and tear troughs. Just be wary that injectables are not permanent – effects are only likely to last a few months. A professional must carry out this treatment.
Thread lifts
Thread lifts are a nonsurgical option that can last 12 to 18 months (more than injectables). It involves using temporary sutures to lift the skin much like a facelift. PDO liquid threads are used in many modern thread lifts. A qualified professional must carry out this treatment.
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion involves essentially sanding off the top layer of skin from an area. This can help to reduce fine wrinkles and even some deeper wrinkles. Dermabrasion has permanent effects. This treatment must be carried out by a professional.
Skin peels
A chemical skin peel can similarly remove the top layer of skin. This can eliminate fine wrinkles, although is not as effective against deeper wrinkles. A qualified professional should carry out this treatment.
Lasers
Finally, there is the option of laser resurfacing. As with dermabrasion and skin peels, this involves removing the top layer of skin to reduce wrinkles. It is not as effective at fighting deeper wrinkles. As with the treatment options listed above, laser resurfacing should be carried out by a professional.
