What better way to relax than being surrounded by mother nature herself? New Zealand is filled with amazing walks and hikes. The Waitakere Ranges and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing are amazing hikes in the North Island. Roy’s Peak and Fox Glacier are great picks for the South Island. As for the beaches, you’re spoilt for choice. Tawaharanui Regional Park and Cathedral Cove are must-sees for the north. The many beaches of Abel Tasman National Park are great options for the south.
You can lace up your hiking boots or pop your jandals on. Or, like a true Kiwi, you can even go barefoot. Although this may be an unusual thing to do, there are many health and physical benefits to going barefoot, particularly on the beach. Due to its antibacterial properties, saltwater rids the skin of toxins and facilitates wound healing. Listen to the soothing rhythm of the waves as you feel the sand between your toes.

A wellness retreat is a great way to find your inner peace. There are many types of retreats, including those that focus on yoga and meditation. For something a little different, why not try food and alcohol detoxes and silent retreats. Cape South in Hawke’s Bay offers many different services. This includes nutrition consultations, massages, yoga and naturopathy.
For an eco-friendly retreat, Hapuku Lodge is perfect. Stay in a craftily-designed treehouse in Kaikoura. Eat fresh produce from the local garden, enjoy a therapeutic massage and go whale watching. Wellness retreats are by no means cheap, but the long-term benefits are very rewarding.
Immerse yourself in the local culture
Maori are the indigenous people of New Zealand. Their history and traditions are highly celebrated in Kiwi culture. Attend a powhiri (formal meeting ceremony) and visit a marae (meeting house). Experience Maori speeches, singing and dance. Admire the intricate carvings both inside and outside of the marae. The best place to experience Maori culture is in Rotorua. There are many Maori villages which encourage visitors to learn about Maori heritage. Stay for a hangi feast, dance performance and even opt for an overnight stay in a marae.
