Picking just one destination in Thailand to visit can be tricky. Spread out over this enchanting kingdom are many different sights and attractions. While some people are to spend a month backpacking around the country and seeing them all, not everyone has this luxury. So just where in Thailand should you stay? To find the best destination, it’s worth considering the type of adventure that you’re after. This post explores 5 popular Thailand destinations and the types of traveler they’re best suited to so that you can pinpoint the best destination for you.

Bangkok

Thailands’ capital is an excellent destination for foodies, history lovers and nightlife enthusiasts alike. It’s also suited to travellers of different budgets. Backpackers travelling on the cheap can live on delicious street food and find cheap bars and hostels on Khao San Road. Big spenders craving some luxury can meanwhile find impressive 5 star hotels and amazing Thai restaurants in Thonburi. Must-visit attractions in Bangkok to consider include the Grand Temple, Wat Arun and the canals. Being Thailand’s largest and busiest city, this is typically not the destination to choose if you’re looking for a calm escape.

Phuket

Looking for stunning beaches? Phuket remains one of the most popular beach destinations in Thailand. There are some paradisiacal hotels here such as these Cape Panwa hotels that have gorgeous sea views and stunning pools. Those looking to travel a little more rugged can still find some great hostels here that are close to the beach. Beyond its beaches, Phuket also boasts incredible nightlife and even a historical side that many tourists overlook.

Chiang Mai

Want to see elephants? Craving a cooler climate? Chiang Mai could be the best destination for you. This is a large city much like Bangkok. However, its northerly location means the temperature is not quite as intense. It’s also got more of a laid-back old-town vibe compared to Bangkok. There are some great temples to explore throughout this city. Meanwhile, the outskirts of the city offers elephant parks and elephant sanctuaries.

Koh Phangan

This island is the location of the world famous Full Moon Parties. Needless to say, Koh Phangan is well-suited to those craving nightlife. However, compared to Bangkok or Phuket, Koh Phangan is a lot more laid-back in the day. It has some beautiful beaches where you can take part in yoga classes or sun-bathe. Koh Phangan and the nearby island of Koh Samui also attract a lot of divers, who are drawn to the underwater caves and tropical marine wildlife.

Krabi

The Krabi region is ideal for travelers wanting to explore Thailand’s natural side. This is a popular hiking destination where you’ll find jungle trails leading to waterfalls and mountain paths leading to remote temples. The coral reefs around the coast of Krabi are also popular for diving and snorkeling. There’s also the Ko Phi Phi islands off the coast of Krabi – here you’ll find, Maya Bay, which was the filming location used in The Beach. There’s a mix of hotels and hostels along the coast. They typically offer a quieter and more secluded escape.
