If you’ve just moved into a home, it can take some time to get everything in order. However, some things can’t wait. There are certain essentials that no home can do without. While some home essentials are obvious, such as flatware and bath towels, other items tend to get overlooked. Here are six often overlooked essentials that every home needs.

1. An Air Conditioner

Those who live in extreme climates will understand the importance of having an air conditioner. If you live in an area where the summers are hot and humid, then having an air conditioner is non-negotiable if you wish to stay comfortable. Similarly, if the temperatures in your area drop to freezing in the winter, you’ll need a way to stay warm.

While sitting in front of a tower fan on a hot summer day maybe a nice temporary relief, it’s not a sustainable solution to the problem of the heat. That’s why you should invest in an AC system. If you live in a studio apartment, a simple window AC unit may do the trick. However, if you live in a larger house, a 5 ton AC unit can keep your home at the ideal temperature year-round.

2. A Vacuum

By keeping your living space clean, you can do more than just make your home look pretty. A clean house can put you at ease mentally, allowing you to be less stressed and more productive. Plus, regular cleanings can prevent things like pest infestations and mold growth.

A vacuum is a cornerstone of home cleaning supplies. Every home should have a vacuum somewhere, whether it’s a stand up vacuum or a handheld one. A vacuum allows you to clean up crumbs, dust, and other messes so that you can keep your home in order.

3. High-Quality Kitchen Knives

Perhaps you think a knife is just a knife and that, as long as it cuts, it’s suitable for your kitchen. However, you deserve better than a discount kitchen knife. Cheap knives can quickly become dull, accumulating chips and other damage along the way. And using a dull knife is one of the easiest ways to injure yourself in the kitchen.

Invest in a high-quality kitchen knife—or set of knives—to take your kitchen to the next level. A good kitchen knife is extremely sharp and will cut through food with ease. It’s an absolute must whether you’re a novice cook or a regular in the kitchen.

4. A Can Opener

You probably never even think about a can opener until you need one. And, by the time you need a can opener, it tends to be too late. You’re stuck standing in your kitchen with an unopened can of tomato sauce, hungry yet unable to make that new pasta recipe you had your heart set on. Picking up a can opener when you first move in will help you avoid this situation entirely.

5. A Toolkit

Every house needs a toolkit. Whether you’re a regular handyman or struggle to put IKEA furniture together, a toolkit can be useful in all sorts of cases. You’ll need the proper tools in order to undertake anything from major home improvement projects to hanging up a framed picture. Look around online or go to your local hardware store to pick up a premade toolkit filled with all of the items you’ll need.

6. A First Aid Kit

You never know when sickness or injury will strike. In any case, it’s always better to be prepared than caught off guard. That’s why you should always keep a first aid kit in your home, stocked with items, such as Band-Aids, latex gloves, antibiotic ointment, aspirin, a thermometer, and more. You can either buy a premade first-aid kit online or assemble your own using items found at your local drugstore.

Remember, no home is complete without these six essentials. Once you have all of these items stocked and ready to go, you can relax or focus on other ways to upgrade your home!
