It’s normal to feel a little anxious from time to time, whether you’re meeting up with a friend you haven’t seen in a while or prepping for a presentation at work. However, it becomes a serious issue when it interferes with your daily life, stopping you from doing the things that you really want to do.

If you feel this way – and as though anxiety has become a constant companion – you aren’t alone. In fact, 40 million adults in the US alone have an anxiety disorder. Nevertheless, you must find a way to manage your anxiety. Here are some top tips to get you started.

  • Identify your triggers. The first step towards eliminating or better managing your anxiety is seeking to understand exactly what anxiety is and what is causing it. For example, while it manifests itself both physically and emotionally, you must get to the route of what is causing you to feel this way. These are known as your anxiety triggers and could be anything from workplace stress to interpersonal relationships.

  • Look into supplements and oils. While there are various tips and tricks designed to get to the root of anxiety and remove it from your life, it’s also vital that you have the necessary tools on hand to alleviate any of the symptoms you may deal with when it occurs. One way you can do this is through health supplements, such as CBD oil. These products are often recommended for those dealing with anxiety as they can help increase your body’s natural production of serotonin – otherwise known as the happiness hormone.

  • Challenge negative thoughts. Negative thinking fuels anxiety, but it can be hard to break out of a negative mindset – especially if these feelings come to you almost naturally. However, you must begin to challenge these thoughts whenever they crop up. For example, every time you think negatively about yourself or assume the worst about a situation, immediately counter this thought with a positive one. Pay yourself a compliment – be that in your head or out loud and repeat it a few times. While this may seem fruitless, it’s a great way to ‘train’ your brain to combat and dispel negativity.

  • Practice self-care. Looking into self-care strategies is another excellent way to begin to eradicate anxiety – for various reasons. To begin with, it encourages you to put yourself first, which means that you will begin to tend to your emotional needs more frequently. However, self-care can also prove useful in building confidence, as it is a way to start feeling better about yourself (both inside and out).

  • Take a break. Sometimes we cannot break away from feelings of anxiety and stress as we view them as a roadblock that needs to be pushed out of the way. While it is true we need to find a way around them eventually, sometimes tackling the problem head-on isn’t useful. Giving yourself a break and allowing yourself to accept and acknowledge your feelings gives you the best opportunity to find a solution and move forward. For example, taking a step back may reveal a new route that was previously out of sight.
